The unit applies to the design, planning and production of a simple garment. The production of the garment may involve the use of a domestic sewing machine and overlocker. Designs may involve modification of existing blocks or patterns.
Work is conducted according to defined procedures and would not be applied in a large scale production environment. The unit is suitable for project-related work as part of a VET in Schools program
Work may be conducted in small to large scale enterprises and may involve individual and team-related activities.
The application of this unit is according to OHS practices of the enterprise and workplace practices, which may include:
requirements prescribed by legislation, awards agreements and conditions of employment
standard operating procedures
work instructions
oral, written and visual communication
quality practices, including responsibility for maintenance of own work quality and contribution to quality improvement of team or section output
housekeeping
tasks related to environmental protection, waste disposal, pollution control, and recycling
This unit requires the application of skills associated with communication and problem solving to develop storyboards, sketches and design concepts, explore design concepts with supervisors and document and interpret pattern requirements. Initiative and enterprise are required to design garment and planning and organising skills are required to complete garment. Ability to use simple technology will also be required and self management skills are required to ensure garment meets quality requirements. This units requires learning skills in order to experiment with and develop design and production skills.
